vsThe verdict, up front

Buy the $39 pair if you need a pointed black stiletto for photographs, a few hours, and a car ride home. Buy the $148 Lou if you actually stand in your heels: real suede, a leather-lined footbed, and a heel set under the ankle rather than behind it. The silhouette is a tie. Everything that happens after hour two is not.

Anything under $30 in this silhouette. Below that price the heel gets set wider and shorter to survive shipping, which quietly turns a stiletto into a kitten heel wearing a stiletto's photograph. It is not a cheaper dupe — it is a different, worse shoe. $39 is the floor on this shape.

Our verdict

Ten out of ten for the Lou. Eight for the steal — and we mean the eight.

At arm's length these photograph almost identically: same 100mm column, same sharp point, same clean topline. The difference is where the weight lands. The Lou places its heel under your ankle bone and lines the footbed in leather, so your weight sits back. The $39 pair sets the heel a few millimetres behind and finishes the inside in synthetic, which slides — and sliding forward is what makes a stiletto hurt. For a dinner, the steal is genuinely excellent. For a wedding, buy the Lou.

Questions we keep getting

No — the upper and lining are synthetic. It photographs close to suede in most lighting and it shrugs off rain, which real suede does not. What synthetic can't do is give at the toe box, so it stays exactly as roomy as it was on day one.
