Three suits, six shoes, three rules for Monday morning.

By I Deserve New Shoes·Updated ·4 min read
TL;DR

A suit is the most-photographed thing in a working wardrobe and the shoe is where it goes wrong. A navy suit with a white chunky sneaker says Friday, fine for the office and wrong for the room you are trying to run; with a burgundy pointed pump it is commanding, and navy and burgundy have run boardrooms for a century. A grey suit with a black pointed pump is sharp, the toe repeats the lapel and the whole line clicks; a nude pump under grey washes out, because grey needs contrast and nude gives it none. A camel suit with a white platform sandal looks heavy; with a leopard kitten heel it looks expensive, and fierce prints are on every autumn runway. All six are under $45 on Amazon and were checked on the day before posting.

Why the shoe decides the suit

Who What Wear's autumn 2026 runway shoe report puts fierce prints, high vamps and something burgundy near the top of the list, and none of them are chunky. A trouser suit is one long line from shoulder to hem, so the shoe either finishes that line or interrupts it. We put three suit colours on the same model and changed only the shoe.

Each colour appears twice, with the shoe most people reach for and the one that actually works. Two of the three winners come straight off that trend list.

Rule one: navy wants burgundy, not white

A navy suit with a white chunky sneaker says Friday. It is fine for the office and wrong for the room you are trying to run, because all the eye sees is the sole. The K KIP WOK platform sneaker has 2,335 reviews and is a good weekend shoe. It is the wrong end for this line.

A burgundy pointed pump makes the suit commanding. The Dream Pairs kitten slingback in burgundy patent, 4.2 stars from 3,511 reviews, $34.99, gives navy the one colour it has always been dressed with. Navy and burgundy have run boardrooms for a century.

Rule two: grey needs contrast

A grey suit with a black pointed pump is sharp. The toe repeats the lapel, and the whole line clicks. The Dream Pairs classic pointed pump in black, 4.3 stars from 387 reviews, $34.99, is the plainest shoe in this piece and the one that earns its place most easily.

Put a nude pump under the same suit and it washes out. Grey needs contrast, and nude gives it none. The Dream Pairs nude pump is the same shoe in the wrong colour for this job; under a cream dress it is the right one.

Rule three: camel wants a fierce print

A camel suit with a white platform sandal looks heavy. Camel is soft; that sole is not. The Dream Pairs platform sandal has 3,548 reviews and belongs under a structured dress, not the softest suit in the wardrobe.

A leopard kitten heel makes camel look expensive. The Mostrin leopard-print slingback, 4.4 stars from 328 reviews, $37.98, is the fierce-print trend of the season on a heel you can wear all day. Camel and leopard are the same family of colour, which is why it reads as one outfit rather than a statement shoe.

Questions we keep getting

A burgundy or oxblood pointed pump, a black pump, or a loafer. Avoid white chunky sneakers unless the day is deliberately casual; they make the suit read as Friday.
