Three outfits, six shoes, three rules you will actually use this autumn.

By I Deserve New Shoes·Updated ·4 min read
TL;DR

Three rules, each shown with the shoe that breaks it and the shoe that keeps it. Grey plaid wide-leg trousers swallow a knee boot, so the boot you paid for disappears under the hem; a pointed kitten slingback pokes past it and runs the leg to the floor. An ivory midi dress ends where a black pump begins, a hard stop at the ankle; in a nude pump the line never ends. Navy with a black strappy sandal is correct and forgettable; navy with a cherry-red patent pump is a decision, because navy was made for red. All six shoes are under $50 on Amazon with free returns, and every one was checked on the day of posting.

Why we show the wrong shoe too

A rule you can only read is easy to nod at and impossible to use. A rule you can see, on the same outfit, in the same room, with only the shoe changed, is one you remember at 7:52 in the morning in front of the mirror.

So each outfit below appears twice. First with the shoe most people reach for. Then with the one that actually works. The outfits are this autumn's: plaid and navy are both on Who What Wear's fall 2026 lists, and cherry red is the accent colour of the season.

Rule one: plaid trousers need a toe, not a boot

Grey glen-plaid wide-leg trousers are back, and the instinct is to put a knee-high boot under them because it is October and boots are what October is for. Under a full-length wide leg the boot vanishes. All that remains is a rounded black toe, and you have paid fifty dollars for a shoe nobody, including you, will see.

A pointed kitten slingback does the opposite. The toe clears the hem and extends the line of the trouser to the floor. The Dream Pairs kitten slingback is 4.2 stars from 3,500 reviews and $34.99, and the two-inch heel is the one you can walk to lunch in.

Rule two: an ivory dress ends where a black pump begins

Put a black pump under an ivory satin midi and the eye stops dead at the ankle. It reads as cut off, a horizontal line drawn across the one place you wanted length. It is not wrong, exactly. It is just shorter than it needed to be.

In a nude pump the dress simply keeps going. Skin, shoe and hem run into one line, and the leg reads longer than it is. The Dream Pairs pointed pump in nude is the same shoe as the black one we used yesterday, 4.3 stars, $34.99, and it will be the most-worn pair in the wardrobe by November.

Rule three: navy was made for red

Navy with black is the pairing everyone has been told is safe, and it is. A black strappy stiletto sandal under a navy knit dress is correct. It is also completely forgettable, which is the price of correct.

A cherry-red patent pump under the same dress is a decision. Navy and red have been a uniform for a century for a reason: the red reads as intentional against the navy in a way it never does against black. The Dream Pairs red patent pump has 7,579 reviews at 4.3 stars and costs $34.99, which is a lot of confidence for the money.

Questions we keep getting

A pointed toe that clears the hem: a kitten slingback or a pointed pump. Knee boots disappear under a full-length wide leg, so save them for skirts and cropped trousers.
